¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!

2008-2009

Dear Parents and Students:

CTK has the pleasure to introduce Spanish 1 as an accredited course for high school. After completion of the class the students will have to pass a test provided by the Dioceses of Richmond. Credit for Spanish 1 in high school will be contingent on the students passing this test. Once the students have passed the dioceses exam, the Dioceses of Richmond will issue a certificate that proves that the students earned high school credit for Spanish 1. The students will have the certificates prior to graduation. The program is divided into Spanish A and Spanish B. In order to be promoted to Spanish B (Spanish 1), the students should have received on their final report card a grade point average of no less than an 85% B.

Requirements to get admitted into Spanish A and Spanish 1:

  • Spanish A is offered to the 7th grade students who received in 6th grade at least an 85% B average in Language Arts.
  • The 7th grade students will have to maintain an 85% B average in Spanish A in order to proceed to take Spanish 1 in 8th grade.
  • During the first year the students will cover half of Spanish 1. In 8th grade we will review again the first part of the book.
  • The 8th grade students, who were admitted into Spanish B, will get an accumulative test to ensure knowledge of the material. Then the second part of the book -Spanish B- is introduced.
  • In order for the students to take the dioceses exam, they will need to maintain an 85% B average in all quarters.

Together, Spanish A and Spanish B will be the same as Spanish 1, however, it is divided in a way that is convenient for the students because they will receive a more in depth exposure to the language and at the same time will give them the opportunity to spend more time in areas in which they may need extra help. The advantage of running the program in this way is that the students will have the opportunity to really learn the language so that they can effectively apply what they learned in Spanish 2 and Spanish 3 and be successful in high school.

Since this is a high school course, the expectations are higher. Students that are taking a second language always have homework. They need to review the vocabulary and grammar on a daily basis.

Please refer to the Supply Link for the supply list for Spanish. All materials are required and mandatory. If you have questions or if you want feedback of how your child is doing, please feel free to call the school main number at 757-625-4951, or e-mail me at irios@ctkparish.org.

I know is going to be a great year!

God Bless You!
