Spanish Curriculum Overview - Seventh Grade
1. Be able to produce appropriate sounds in Spanish.
Recite, correctly pronounce and use letters of the alphabet.
Imitate and reproduce sounds authentic to the language as modeled by the instructor.
Acceptably pronounce all formally-introduced vocabulary items.
Sound out new or unfamiliar words with reasonable accuracy.
2. Be able to write letters, letter combinations and words upon hearing them in Spanish.
Recognize and write the letters of the alphabet.
Correctly spell familiar vocabulary items upon hearing them spoken in their entirety
or dictated letter-by-letter.
Spell new unfamiliar words with reasonable accuracy.
3. Be able to use simple greetings, responses and farewells in Spanish.
Initiate verbal greetings and farewells (hello, goodbye, etc.).
Respond appropriately to verbal greetings and farewells.
Understand and use greetings, responses and farewells in written form (reading and
writing).
4. Be able to use the numbers 0-2000 in Spanish.
Know and correctly pronounce the numbers 0-2000, along with terminology needed
for doing basic math problems.

5. Be able to communicate with regard to "days and dates" in Spanish.

9. Be able to understand and communicate following the structural patterns and
rules of the Spanish language.

Know and use definite and indefinite articles, nouns and adjectives both independent of and in conjunction with each other.
Know and apply the concept of number and gender agreement.
Know the difference between declarative and interrogative sentence structure (word order, punctuation and vocal inflection).
10. Possess a basic knowledge of the geography and culture of countries and areas in the western (our) hemisphere that are associated with Spanish.
Recognize and verbally identify Spanish-speaking countries and related areas of
Latin America on map or globe.
Spell in Spanish the names of Latin American countries and selected areas of significance.
Acceptably pronounce in Spanish the names of Latin American countries and selected
areas of significance.
Know and use the adjectives of nationality associated with the countries and peoples of Latin America.
Know the words and melody to, and be able to sing in Spanish, at least one song
of Latin American origin.
Briefly discuss or comment upon at least one Latin American custom or holiday.
Spanish Curriculum Overview - Eight Grade
1. Maintain or improve, through continual review and practice, one's personal level of proficiency with regard to the previous year's outcomes and content areas
(refer to Spanish Curriculum Overview--Seventh Grade, items 1-10).
2. Know and be able to communicate using newly introduced vocabulary items.
To recognize, recall and use new, formally-introduced vocabulary derived from our textbook
(examples of themes are Foods, Stores and Shopping; The Family/Family Members,
The Body/Parts of the Body, Clothing, Colors and Shopping, Sports, Traveling).
To recognize, recall and use auxiliary vocabulary introduced in class and derived from sources
other than our textbook (i.e. current events, or other items of interest from magazines,
newspapers, radio, television, signs and billboards, people, etc.).
3. Know and be able to communicate using newly introduced grammatical patterns and
rules of Spanish language. Recognize, recall and use:
Verbs, both regular and irregular.
Idiomatic expressions with TENER and HACER.
Contractions AL and DEL.
The "personal A".
Demonstrative Adjectives.
Possessive Structure(s): short and long adjectives, and DE.
Prepositions and prepositional pronouns.
Any additional grammatical concepts and structural patterns which might be
introduced, although not appearing above.
4. Develop and possess a more thorough knowledge of and appreciation for Hispanic culture and influence in the world through one or more of a variety of means.
Read, understand and use information presented in cultural readings appearing in our textbook.
Become actively involved in a special or timely project pertaining to Hispanic culture.
Actively participate in classroom discussions, activities and/or presentations based in Hispanic culture.
